BLOXHAM SCHOOL RUGBY 2013: SEASON REPORT

This has been a vintage season for Bloxham Rugby - highlights include the overall win in the block fixture against Oratory (the first since 1989) and the progress of three teams into the later stages of national cup competitions. The 1st XV went out in the last 32 of the Natwest Cup to a powerful Warwick side but could look back with pride at their 31-7 win over Oratory, their 71-0 demolition of Shiplake and the memorable cup victory at Bishops Stortford. Like the Firsts, more than half of our teams enjoyed better than a 70% winning record. The Colts A XV only lost once in 12 matches and the 3rd XV twice in 15 matches. The Junior Colts A XV beat Stowe, St Edward’s and St Albans on the way to Round 6 of the Natwest Cup and only went out to Aylesbury Grammar School by one score. Any one of these teams could lay claim to being the team of the term in a typical season, but perhaps the strongest claim to that title comes from the Exham House 1st XV, which went unbeaten throughout the regular season, winning 15 out of 15, only tasting defeat in the last match of the season, in the quarter finals of the Under 13s national competition, when they were narrowly beaten by a team from Brynteg School in Bridgend, a school of over 2,000 pupils. Some of the most encouraging successes came in less publicised areas, such as the 3rd XV’s record, the progress made by the Colts B XV and the excellent win by the Junior Colts B XV over Rendcomb. Surely the two most telling statistics from this season are that a school with 251 boys was regularly able to put out 11 rugby teams and that every single boy in the Third Form represented the Yearlings this term.

Success in school sport is largely down to establishing a tradition of success and standards for later generations to emulate, and in this respect Bloxham rugby enjoyed the finest season in its history in 2013.

RUGBY REPORT 7/12/13

A memorable season for Bloxham rugby ended for most of our teams with an overall score of 6-5 in the biggest block fixture of the year, with Oratory, the first time this has happened since 1989. The two Yearlings sides, ravaged by illness and injury, went down by big margins to end a long and difficult season, but there was success in every other year group. Pride of place must go to the three senior sides; the 1st XV won 31-7 to set themselves up for next week’s daunting cup fixture against Warwick, while the 2nd XV ( 10 wins out of 14) and the 3rd XV (13 wins out of 15) both finished the season in style. So too did the Colts A XV (25-0), who have only lost once in 11 games, and the two other sides still in cup action, Exham House 1st XV and the Junior Colts A XV. The Colts B XV went down to a 40 points to 5 defeat which flattered the opposition but underlined the need to take opportunities whenever they arise. On a separate note, it was great to see the pitch at Park Close back in use for rugby, as it really does make for a wonderful venue. Attention now shifts to three massive cup games next Wednesday (for the First XV and Junior Colts A XV) and Thursday (Exham House 1st XV), when all three sides would be delighted to see as many supporters on the touchline as possible.

Earlier in the week, the three senior teams all won at King Edward VI, Stratford. The Third XV scored some spectacular tries in their 50-5 victory. In contrast, both the 1st XV (24-5) and the 2nd XV (10-5) won poor games, though Ed Yeates did score a tremendous hat trick of tries for the Firsts.

As can be seen from the table below, this weekend’s rugby results against Oratory represent considerable progress from past results. While individual sides have experienced success in this fixture (4 wins for the Seconds in the last 7 years) Oratory have long been Bloxham’s bogey team at Firsts level. This was our 1st XV’s first win over them since 1997! We have been playing Oratory since 1987 and only once before won the block fixture overall, 1989 when we won 5, lost 4 and drew the 1st XV game (the closest the Firsts came to defeat in the unbeaten season).

Now Junior Colts Match 1st XV !

Bloxham’s Junior Colts A XV put on a clinical display against committed visitors from St Albans School to join the 1st XV in reaching the sixth round of the Natwest Cup. Bloxham won 18-0 with two tries, the first from Sam Fletcher and the second  from Will Brown, one converted by Jonty Russell-Rayment, who also kicked two penalties.

The second half was marred by a shoulder injury to the influentilal George Morley and we hope that he makes a rapid recovery ahead of the next game.

News in suggests that Aylesbury Grammar are the next opposition but again Bloxham have home advantage at Fortress Strawberry Terrace! The date is Wednesday 11 December which is the same day that the 1st XV face Warwick School. What a finale to the Term that double header will make!

Thanks to all the parents who gave their vocal support again today. With most of the school in church you were much needed but at least prayers were answered!

More news from the Round 6 Cup win for the 1st XV:

Bloxham make history by sinking Bishop's Stortford College

Bloxham have reached the sixth round of the U18 NatWest Cup after a stunning second half comeback saw them beat Bishop’s Stortford College 27-22.

Bloxham will play the winner of tomorrow’s huge West Midlands derby between Warwick and Solihull in the next round. Joining them in the 6th round in Midlands A will be Stamford, who came perilously close to losing their unbeaten home record today but pulled through to beat Uppingham 14-12.

Back in Bishop’s Stortford, Bloxham had started strongly, racing to a 12-0 lead in the opening fifteen minutes as their fast and intricate back play caused the home defence all sorts of bother. The game at this point was very much a tussle between the strong Bishop’s Stortford College pack and the skilful Bloxham backs, however Bishop’s Stortford were soon to score a smooth backs try of their own as some slick handling from a tap penalty released their right wing to score. That was soon followed by another try for the home side as their pack really began to rumble, driving over through a rolling maul to bring the scores to 10-12.

The shift in momentum was palpable and Bishop’s Stortford were now hammering away at the Bloxham defence though some strong forward carrying. With the Bloxham defence on the back foot, College soon moved the ball wide through their pacy openside, who released their multi talented number 8 to crash over before converting his own try. That gave Bishop’s Stortford College a 17-12 half time lead, and while they had looked vulnerable to the Bloxham break, their dominance in the pack was proving too much to handle.

However Bloxham’s coaching staff brilliantly worked their magic at half time, fine tuning their forward play and squeezing an extra 10% out of their pack and it worked brilliantly. Immediately the away side were on the attack, and though they spurned a couple of scoring opportunities they crucially still came away with points, through a penalty from their excellent full back. It was he who was to engineer the next big moment in the game, punting the ball deep into Bishop’s Stortford territory, to give the away team possession right on their own line. The Bloxham pack turned on the pressure to force the home fly half to touch down behind his own line to give Bloxham an attacking scrum. With their rejuvenated set piece Bloxham were able to use the scrum as the perfect platform to release their backs, who finished off the job with aplomb through the left wing to regain the lead, 20-17.

They were soon touching down again, this time after more great work from their full back as he countered back after a Bishop’s Stortford clearance, exchanging passes with his inside centre before the skilful number twelve supplied a sublime offload for his outstanding number eight to crash over. The conversion took the score out to 27-17, and having been behind at half time Bloxham now looked in control. However Bishop’s Stortford were not about to let their NatWest Cup run end in a hurry, and for much of the rest of the game they piled on the pressure in Bloxham territory. In the end though their efforts were to be rewarded with just a solitary score, once again for their impressive number eight after another fine example of the driving maul sent him crashing over.

It brought the scores to 22-27 but Bloxham were able to hold on and secured possession near the end, allowing their scrum half to boot the ball out of play, sparking jubilant celebrations as the final whistle blew. It ended a fine game of rugby, one that had all the ingretients of a cup classic, with good rugby, excellent tries, high tension, and a close finish. It was Bloxham who edged it though, and they now play in the semi-finals of the Cup for the first time in their history, a fine achievement.

RUGBY REPORT 16/11/13

Variety was the watchword on Saturday with 11 matches against four different opponents. The Colts A XV and Exham House (U13) A XV remain unbeaten after big wins on Saturday, while there were also sizeable victories for the three senior teams and the Exham House B team. The Colts B XV had a thrilling 27-27 draw at Warwick and the Yearlings A XV enjoyed a fine away win at King Henry's, Coventry. The home team got off to the better start and took an early lead with a converted try. Sam Canale-Hopwell then went three quarters of the pitch only to knock on over the line. He soon made amends with a good opportunist try converted by George Speakman. In the second half Freddie Betteridge started to win clean line out ball and Monty Ng was once again outstanding at the break down. Three unanswered tries were scored by Ollie Morgan, Percy Hunt and George Speakman, along with one conversion. Probably the best performance of the day came from the Junior Colts B XV, coming from behind at half time to win a tremendous match against Rendcomb 28-24. The deciding factors were Bloxham’s powerful midfield of Beever, Lumb and Daborn, the spirit shown by the whole team in the second half and a try-saving tackle near the end by James Packe.

RUGBY REPORT 11/11/13

Saturday was a red letter day for Bloxham rugby with our Junior Colts A coach Amber Reed representing England in their 40-20 win over France at Twickenham. She switches from centre to full back for Wednesday evening’s game against Canada.

Meanwhile the day’s school matches yielded five wins and five losses. The Firsts beat Wellingborough 36-24 but were guilty of letting Wellingborough back into the game through a combination of ill-discipline and complacency which led to a closer score line than it should have been. All five tries came from backs, which illustrates our ability to create scoring chances.

The Colts had another good win and the Seconds put on a super show of what their coach termed “electric rugby”, with ten different try scorers.  The Junior Colts A XV also had a big win but the rest of our junior sides struggled to cope with the absence of key players due to illness and injury. The Junior Colts B XV lost a game they should have won, letting a 24-17 lead slip through lapses in concentration.

The 3rds and Colts B XVs had competitive fixtures at Radley and the Exham House 1st XV were in great form, winning their 10th game in a row and ending Abingdon’s unbeaten record into the bargain in a thrilling encounter. The Abingdon pack dominated for the first ten minutes and only determined defence stopped the line being crossed. Eventually the Bloxham forwards, inspired by Morgan Haylor's work at the break down, gave the backs space to run. First Ben Staveley-Parker scored wide out which was superbly converted by his brother Toby. Henry Hopkins then latched on to a dropped pass and dribbled the ball thirty metres to score a magnificent individual try, once again converted by Toby Staveley-Parker,

The second half was end to end. A moment’s indecision gave Abingdon the chance to score but the matched was settled by a superb penalty from wide out by Toby Staveley - Parker. All the Bloxham team deserve a special mention for the team spirit they showed against a much bigger side. Their attitude to work for one another both in defence and attack was the most pleasing from a coach’s point of view The Bloxham parents went away from the match having seen a true classic.

RUGBY REPORT 8/11/13

The first set of fixtures after Half Term proved to be testing, given the dreadful weather conditions. The First XV had a good win against Lawrence Sheriff School from Rugby and the Colts remained unbeaten, scoring 38 points without reply against Lawrence Sheriff’s 2nd XV.  Our other unbeaten side, Exham House 1st XV, also enjoyed an excellent win against Cokethorpe.  In a lack-lustre first half the Bloxham forwards were totally eclipsed in the loose by a Cokethorpe eight which showed greater desire to win the ball. However, in the second half Bloxham started to compete and gradually produced good ball for our midfield to weave their magic.

The remaining matches were against Kingham Hill and involved our sides playing up a team, so our 2nd XV took on Kingham’s 1st XV and lost narrowly and our Junior Colts B XV lost to their A XV, mainly thanks to a poor first half when we let in two breakaway tries. However, a slightly strengthened Yearlings B team enjoyed an excellent 15-7 victory and the Colts B XV pulled off a good win against a big set of forwards in dire conditions. The 3rd XV triumphed 28-5 and having won 8 out of their 9 fixtures, they are now the 2nd highest rated 3rd XV in the country on the Schools Rugby website, nestled between Sedbergh and Millfield in the table!

Bloxham's Fifth Form, top set mathematicians, have recorded  outstanding results from their GCSE papers sat in November.

Of the thirteen who entered the examination, twelve have returned A* grades and the other an A grade in a truly outstanding example of high level teaching and learning.

Maths teacher, Andrew Goldsmith knows the cohort well:

' I have taught this group for five years since their time in the Bloxham Lower School . They have always had the ability to achieve in this subject coupled with a really strong and competitive work ethic towards their study. They are a pleasure to teach and I expect to see them go on to great things at A Level and beyond.'

Head of Mathematics Julian Berry added:

' That the group has achieved so many top grades in this very demanding subject is a great credit to them all. To have so many strong mathematical brains working together is something that offers constant challenge and inspiration. I am delighted for them all and hope that many will choose A levels to study here that will employ their mathematical knowledge and skills.'

Our two senior sports teams, boys' hockey and girls' netball recorded excellent weekend wins in their respective opening fixtures.

The boys' travelled to Stowe and were out of the blocks very quickly rattling in two quick fire goals to grab an early advantage. Bloxham continued to dominate throughout and finished very comfortable 5-0 winners.

Meanwhile our girls' netball team faced Malvern and in a very tight game, came out as winners by 22 to 20. A great start to the term and to 2014!

Exham House boys were also in action and showed that their impressive rugby form carried over into hockey as well. Swanbourne provided the opposition in two 7 a side games. In the A team encounter Bloxham made merry and ran out winners by 12 goals to 3 while in the B team Bloxham scored 5 without reply.

Boys Hockey Round-up

The 1st team played Bromsgrove in the National cup knockout in their 1st game of the season on Wednesday. Unfortunately the team were unlucky to lose 2-0 having created a number of chances but could not put them away. The U15A’s also their 1st fixture mid-week playing against Solihull. The team lost 1-0 and it showed that it was their 1st match of the season compared to Solihull who have been playing hockey the whole of the Michaelmas term.

The weekend block fixture saw us play against Stowe. The 1st team started the game extremely well and took an early 2-0 lead. As the game progressed we were always in control and eventually won 5-0. The second team had a very close game and were winning up until ten minutes to go; unfortunately two late goals saw them lose the game 3-2. The 3rd team had a closer game than the 0-3 score line suggests, again conceding two very late goals. The 4th team continue their form of last season winning 2-0.

Our junior teams had a tough day against Stowe. However the U15A team improved their performance dramatically from mid-week, dominating possession and creating chances but unfortunately could not put those opportunities away. The U15B and C team had a tough fixture, with Stowe looking more organised and skilful, already having played 2 fixtures. This resulted in heavy defeats for the sides 6-0 and 12-0.

Exham house had a great start to the season with the 1st VII beating Swanbourne comfortably, more impressive was the style in which they played moving the ball around the pitch together as a team and putting away their chances. The 2nd VII also had a good start to the season running out 5-0 winners.

On Sunday we took three teams to a National Schools Association (NSEA) Show Jumping Competition at Bury Farm, Slapton, Bucks.  It was a long day with the first competitors having to arrive by just after 8.00am and the last of us not arriving home until 10pm.  There were between 80 and 140 competitors in each of 8 classes.

As ever, all team members were a credit to Bloxham School and we had some very good results.  It was nice to be met by the secretary at the end of the day who commented on how successful a day Bloxham had had.

Grace Hopkins is deserving of a special mention.  She was in the 70cm and 80cm classes and rode to fantastic rounds to finish 2nd and 5th respectively out of approximately 130 competitors. With her usual coach and groom ( who doubles up as her mother!) absent Grace was very professional and mature in her approach from caring for her pony to walking the course and she got the results she deserved.

That said, ALL competitors did well.  For some it was not “their day” but the children concerned were supportive of the remainder of their team and behaved professionally.  As many sports are, riding can be character building!

Bloxham's Young Enterprise team enjoyed a great deal of sales success at a Cowley based trade fair on Saturday before receiving the wind-up call from teacher in charge Mrs Adrienne Cooper.

Strong winds, at near hurricane force, were the cause of the problem rather than any unbusinesslike issues! The Centre was badly affected by the storm and when glass sheets started falling from the ceiling it was thought to be a good time to be elsewhere! Sales of the Company's tie dye T-shirts had been going very well indeed and were showing a more than healthy return for the young entrepreneurs when the storm forced the premature closure of the Cowley Templars Square shopping centre.

The team will be hoping for a fair wind when it comes to the next trade fairs in Banbury and Stratford.

Caspar Henderson delivers a compelling lecture to the Eunoia Society

The Book of Barely Imagined Beings: a 21st Century Bestiary is the intriguing title of a beautifully produced book that has recently been shortlisted for the prestigious 2013 Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books (the Science world’s equivalent of the Booker). When I learned that the book’s author, Caspar Henderson, was to be delivering a lecture at Bloxham, I was excited at the prospect of attending this Eunoia Society and Biology Society event.

Entitled ‘Curious Beasts: Wonder, Nature and the Anthropocene’, the lecture opened with a discussion of the Bestiary – a Medieval Compendium of Beasts – and proceeded to offer us a historical overview of changing ways in which humans have viewed the world of animals. The lecture then gave us a taste of the alphabetical structure at the heart of Henderson’s book. With the use of some stunning images, the lecture took us on a journey through a variety of creatures from A to Z: from an axolotl to a Zebra Fish. Henderson also spoke about medical research and de-extinction of certain species such as a mammoth. He ensured that we reflected on topical issues and his inspiring talk gave me an insight to a world of possibilities for the future which otherwise I would not have entertained. I am sure that future Eunoia Society lectures will continue to do the same and increase my awareness of the world and of my place within it.

Catherine Charlwood speaks to the Eunoia Society about the Memorial – and about how we choose to remember.

On Tuesday 4th February, the Eunoia Society hosted an outstanding talk from Catherine Charlwood, a Cambridge graduate and PhD student at the University of Warwick. Entitled ‘The Ethics of Memorial and Commemoration’, the talk was truly inter-disciplinary in its scope as it ranged across the disciplines of medical science, poetry, history, politics and architecture. Early in the lecture, Hardy’s poetry, with its obsessive focus on what might be retained or kept after one’s death, was shown to reflect the anxieties of an age grappling with the troubling consequences of Darwin’s ideas. It was fascinating but saddening to find out that whilst Hardy’s heart was buried in a churchyard in Stinsford, Dorset, the remainder of his ashes were interred at Westminster Abbey, against his wishes. As the lecture progressed, the focus turned increasingly towards the ‘politics of remembrance’, and students were encouraged to reflect upon the motivations behind the construction of memorials and historical monuments (and students were also asked to think about the difference between a memorial and a monument). The questioning approach to the subject (Who is doing the remembering? Who exactly - and how many - are being remembered? What is the connection between the location of the memorial and those who are being remembered?) was highly engaging and led to some thoughtful and astute responses. This was an important talk that encouraged us to think deeply and carefully and to reflect upon how we – and others – represent the past.

The Eunoia Society Programme is a series of academic events. In this case, Catherine Charlwood’s lecture was delivered specifically to an audience of students from the 5th form and the Lower Sixth. Eunoia is a Greek word meaning ‘Beautiful thinking’.

Gold Awards represent a huge commitment and inner drive and therefore enhance any CV . The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is enjoying a great deal of popularity at Bloxham as is illustrated by the fact that no fewer than 11 recent Old Bloxhamists went to St James Palace to receive their DofE Gold Awards from HRH The Earl of Wessex (Prince Edward) on one day in February.

Pictured here outside the Palace are (L to R):

Ben Davies, Will Glover, Tommy Ekers, Sophie Waller and Lucy Dales.

James Brockless ,Christopher Fox ,Tom Gurney ,Rob Law, Imogen Smith and India Toyne also received their awards.

Bloxham School Physics Society – Inaugural Talk

Friday, 7th March 2014

8-9pm in the VLR

Michael Wheeldon – Engineering and F1

Michael is an Old Bloxhamist who left in 2010 to read Engineering at Peterhouse, Cambridge University. He has postponed his final year in order to take up a prestigious, year-long placement working with the Stress Group at Red Bull F1, current holders of both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship titles. He plans to talk to you about his experiences of the engineering degree at Cambridge, what engineering is really all about and to give some insight in to his work at Red Bull. The talk will last around 30 minutes, and will be followed by a half hour reception, during which you will have the opportunity to chat to Michael and ask any questions you may have. Refreshments will be provided.

Attendance is compulsory for all 6th formers studying physics and 5th form set i scientists, but all others are welcome to attend. I would ask that you email the Physics Society President, Natasha Girling, if you plan to attend so that we can ensure that we cater for the correct numbers.

As part of this year’s Confirmation Service, the new font which has been presented to the School Chapel thanks to a bequest by the late Chris Stokes will be blessed by the Provost, Bishop Lindsay Urwin. Chris’ brother Jeremy will be present on the occasion and Old Bloxhamists are very welcome to attend the service and drinks afterwards.

12.30pm 200 Club / OB Buffet Lunch in the Dining Hall, followed by 200 Club Draw.

12.45pm A short service will take place in the Parish Churchyard where the Chaplain will dedicate the new headstone for the grave of Paddy Kellett (WN 2005-2010). The headstone has been made and donated by Old Bloxhamist Joseph Barsby (CR 2005-2008).

3.00pm The Old Bloxhamist 1st XI will play Banbury Hockey Club on the New Astro and the Old Bloxhamist 2nd XI will play a School XI on the Old Astro. Both these games are being played in memory of Paddy Kellett – Paddy played for Banbury Hockey Club as well as Bloxham School, and so these games provide a very fitting way to commemorate him.

4.00pm onwards Tea in the Small Dining Room
