U15 Girls in County Podium Finish

This year’s County U15 Netball tournament was held at Oxford's Central venue. It was a very popular event with 17 teams participating for County champ status. Four pools made the initial round of the competition, with 7 minute halves of 3 games.

Our U15 A team played extremely well in their pool coming runners up to St. Helens and St. Katherine after a very exciting and energetic game. SHSK were by far the strongest opponent’s and were finalist.

Bloxham were drawn against Pool C winners Tudor Hall in the quarter finals. The girls were on it, to win it! They played well remaining focused throughout against a confident Tudor Hall team. It started well for Bloxham gaining early possession which lead to a relatively easy win.

Bloxham, SHSK, Oxford High and Cokethorpe were the successful teams remaining playing for a place in the final.

A.Gulliver, O.Marston and E.Rymer were under pressure to perform well in defense against Oxford High’s talented attacking team. With I.MacColl, R.Smith, E.Whybrow and E.Jeffrey really excited, they had everything to play for and understood the urgency to keep possession and to score goals.

Both teams remained focused and went into battle. Oxford had the advantage of the first centre pass and attacked very well scoring imenently. Bloxham competed and matched like for like throughout but unfortunately a penalty gave Oxford possession off a Bloxham centre during the last minute of the game which robbed Bloxham their opportunity to replay SHSK in the final. Overall score 8-6 to Oxford High.

.An unlucky and disappointing result but everyone performed well throughout the afternoon and evening, rewarded with KFC and a badly sung sing song on the journey home !

Thank you to C.Wilson who kept score and was the teams travelling substitution. Thank you parents for supporting the girls and making it a very positive experience for all.

Weekly Summary

This week was wonderful for Bloxham Netball!

The Senior teams won 6 out of 6 matches. We played Banbury on Saturday, the Town club team that we lost to during our PreSeason in January, and despite being behind at 3/4 time, the girls showed great resolve and determination to put more goals on the board and won!

The U14s competed against all the local schools in the North Oxon Tournament which we entered for the first time this year and came out on top - well done to them. The U15s also had a great week, getting through to the semi finals of the County Tournament, losing by 2 goals to Oxford High in the last minute of the match.

Exham House had a packed week, with matches against Cokethorpe and a new fixture for this year against Swanbourne House School and Winchester House School.

Finally we took over 70, 3rd and 4th formers and the 3rd and 4th Senior teams to watch a NPL game at the weekend where they saw the highest level of youth netball played in the UK.

Liv & Squiggle meet Warhorse Joey

Liv Edkins demonstrates and models each year for the BETA International Equestrian Trade Show, (and has done since she was 4 years old with Poppy, her first little pony!), this year taking her new horse, Squiggle.

Liv not only demonstrated innovative new products fresh to the market, and also some still on trial, but was a model for Charles Owen clothing and riding helmets. She also met the research team from the BBC's “Dragons Den”.

Liv was also fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with the cast of War Horse, and Joey, one of the puppet horses. On two of the days at the show, Liv actually took her horse into the arena with Joey, and they met and got to know each other!! It was such a unique and special experience, with Joey being so horse like, Squiggle couldn’t make it out; she really thought it was a real horse!

It is such a wonderful experience with thought that we might share it here.

Rugby 7's Team in Silver Finish

Bloxham’s senior Sevens squad warmed up for Rosslyn Park by finishing runners-up to MCS Oxford in the Sibford Sevens today, but there will be a feeling of frustration that they let slip a 14-0 lead in the final, eventually going down 28-14 as they ran out of steam against a physical Magdalen side. Earlier the two teams had fought out an attritional 7-7 draw at the group stage, and Bloxham had also enjoyed comfortable wins over KE Stratford, Cotswold School, Akeley Wood and Warwick. Alex Caviezel Cox scored 58 points while captain Ed Yeates finished as top try scorer with 8. The side played some good sevens all day and were noticeably more effective when playing on a wider pitch rather than the narrow one in the final, which perhaps favoured Magdalen. The Firsts now join the Colts (U16) and the Exham House First XV (U13) in attending the world’s biggest rugby tournament, the National Schools Sevens, at Rosslyn Park next week. Good luck to all three sides.

Bloxham 35, King Edward VI, Stratford 0

Bloxham 28, Cotswold School 7

Bloxham 7, MCS Oxford 7

Bloxham 35, Akeley Wood 0 (quarter final)

Bloxham 35, Warwick 7 (semi final)

Bloxham 14, MCS Oxford 28 (final)

In the National U13 Cup yesterday the final, hosted by Bloxham but between Woodhouse Grove and Dulwich College, ended in a 3-3 draw with both coaches shaking hands on the final whistle and agreeing to share the title for the season.

Woodhouse Grove are a fellow Woodard School and it was particularly nice to welcome them to Bloxham.

Bloxham School Colts Sevens at Rosslyn Park, 2014

Bloxham’s Colts (U16) VII did themselves proud at this week’s Rosslyn Park Sevens, matching the performance of the school’s Under 13s earlier in the week by winning their group and then going one step further by winning an elimination game to proceed to the second day, finally going out to a much-fancied Sedbergh outfit in the round of the last 16. With minimal preparation and no warm-up tournaments, we seemed to be up against it in the toughest of the six sections in the world’s biggest rugby tournament. But Bloxham stormed through their group, winning 52-0 against Leicester Grammar School, 19-5 against Barry CS, 48-0 against Ibstock Place and 36-7 against Lord Howard of Effingham School. A tense first half in our knockout game against Yarm School was followed by a convincing second period as Bloxham pulled away to a fine 26-14 win. None of our opponents on the first day could cope with the strong running of our outside backs, Jack Briggs, Jake Dew and Will Adams, while George Grieve ran in eight tries and, along with Briggs, provided invaluable experience for his young team mates. Scrum half George Barbeary was increasingly influential as the tournament went on. The forwards, George Cassell, George Ding and captain Will Beament won plenty of loose ball and were fearless in defence, while the three fourth formers in the squad, Will Brown, Tarquin Hathaway and Oliver Kilgallon gained invaluable experience and added a real hunger when they came on. Indeed, Kilgallon was for me the revelation of the tournament.

Having reached the second day Bloxham returned to take their place with the likes of Wellington, Eton and eventual winners QEGS Wakefield in the top 16 sides in the country. Playing in front of a sizeable crowd on a big pitch against well-drilled opponents who gave us little time on the ball, Bloxham could easily have cracked after going two scores down, but superb tries by Dew and Barbeary brought us level and the momentum was all with Bloxham until a Sedbergh breakway led to a try, followed by another which resulted in a somewhat flattering 26-12 final score to the Cumbrian side. Bloxham could be proud of their defensive effort and some superb sevens and these players should return to Rosslyn Park in future years with great confidence. My thanks go to Andy Goldsmith and Tom Tuthill for driving the minibuses and assisting, and to Dr Haynes for his invaluable and selfless efforts on the medical side. I am also grateful to all those parents who supported on each of the days and braved the terrible traffic en route. In particular I would like to thank Simon Grieve for his superb photographs from the first day. Above all I would like to thank the 11 squad members who did their school and their parents proud.

Cricketers Tune Up at Lilleshall NSC

A 17 boy squad left Bloxham School in the early hours of Monday 14th April to venture to the National Sports Centre, Lilleshall, for a pre-season Cricket camp. The squad was a mixture of current, potential and future 1st XI players, with an age range of 13-18 years old. Upon arrival at Lilleshall the boys were taken back by the stunning surroundings of the center, but probably more so by the presence of several Elite sporting teams sharing the location with us, notably England Hockey, British Gymnastics and England Basketball.

After a brief introduction by Mr Richmond, the boys were set to work on a self reflection task, looking at their current skill set within the game and anaylsing their own strengths and weaknesses. This became a common theme throughout the 3 days. After a fantastic lunch, the boys were set to work by Mr Finch, the 1st XI Coach, on fielding, in particular the correct body position whilst in the field. The day ended with a productive Net session prior to dinner. By now the boys had come to terms with the quality and quantity of the food available to them at Lilleshall, it didn't take much convincing for them to re-charge their energy supplies. The day ended with a pub quiz, with a slight cricket emphasis on it, hosted by Mr Richmond and Mr Finch.

By the second day the boys had come fully up to speed with the standards and expectations set upon them by the coaching team. Tuesday was full on from the word go; fielding practise first thing was followed by attacking batting technique, after lunch there was more batting technique work, alongside individual batting, bowling and keeping training. Although there were some tired bodies, the day was finished off on another positive note with a well worked and focused Net session. Post dinner the football took centre stage in the Lilleshall bar, with many of the boys putting their feet up after a long day of cricket.

Spirits were still high going into the last day; fielding and individual skills work preceded the main event of the week, a 6 aside indoor competition between the boys. With Mr Hobley stepping into one of the teams it was always going to be a highly competitive affair. It was extremely rewarding to see many of the skills/techniques that had been worked on being used during the indoor games, all of which were tight games played in good spirit. A staff-player debrief after the tournament was the last opportunity to review the 3 days of training, it was extremely rewarding to hear from all the boys how much they had enjoyed the experience
