We welcomed professional artist Andrew Macara to Bloxham in March to launch our first Creative Arts Week.

Derbyshire based Andrew gave master classes to two groups of Bloxham pupils during which he painted two scenes whilst giving a running commentary about his art and his methods.

Andrew Macara is predominantly self- taught although he did spend a short period at the St. Ives School of Painting. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1981 and joined the New English Arts Club in 1984.

He is well established as a very collectable and much shown, contemporary figurative artist. His tonal feel to his work and his ability to work with light and shadow are his hallmarks.

His most usual popular paintings, the ones he is most known for , are beach and snow scenes and it was one of each that he did whilst at Bloxham. In the shorter clips we have speeded up the video to show how quickly Andrew changes the daunting blank canvas in something instantly recognisable. It shows the bravery of the artist and also the acute awareness of position, colour and movement.

We also give links to pretty much the entire talks. In themselves they make fantastic art lessons to be enjoyed by all.

In conjunction with the talk there is an exhibition of Andrew’s paintings together with other modern British artists, at Park Close. This can be viewed by appointment with Nick Irvine (ni@bloxhamschool.com)
